Our History

Founded in 1953, our practice has a rich heritage that stretches back over six decades. With a lineage that can be traced back to the notable architect E.D. Jefferiss Mathews OBE, a former Vice President of the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA), we have a long history of providing expert design and architectural services to our clients. Our practice has undergone several changes and restructurings over the years, with a major milestone being the formation of HMH Architects in 1995 by John Kinmond and Andrew Watson. In recent years, the practice has continued to evolve, with David McKellar becoming Principal in 2022 and the practice becoming a Limited Company.

Our philosophy is driven by a strong technical understanding and an approach founded in design and detailing from an early stage, integrated with a personal, client-centred focus. We offer a range of services to both commercial and domestic clients, across various sectors, including social and affordable housing, extra care housing schemes, shelters and refuges, homeless accommodation, and high-end residential developments. Our expertise includes modest home extensions to large-scale developments, as well as bespoke Supported Living developments for vulnerable adults.
