Designing for a sustainable future, one building at a time.
AAB architects is a design-led practice based in north London, providing a proactive architectural service tailored to individual client needs. Established in 2000 by practice principal Alice Brown, the practice has kept its approachable, genuine nature, taking pride in positive working relationships with clients, consultants, and contractors. Predominantly working on educational, community, and residential projects for a wide range of clients, the practice specializes in work to existing buildings, including reuse, repair, and conservation.
Our Ethos
At AAB architects, our practice ethos stems from the following values:
- Community & Social Engagement - We work closely with charities, community groups, local authorities, and schools to create better places and buildings for our communities, engaging with real issues that have positive social, economic, and cultural value.
- Historical & Contextual Understanding - Our interest and continual research into the evolution of buildings and places feeds into an ongoing pool of knowledge that actively contributes to our architectural design and practice.
- Low Impact - We aspire to provide affordable, durable, low-carbon buildings, adopting a rigorous approach to design, coupled with extensive experience in construction and management. We re-use, repair, and conserve where possible, to reduce the embodied carbon of construction and minimize waste, and retrofit to reduce energy in use.
Our Expertise
Our passion for adapting, converting, and extending existing buildings stems from our approach to sustainability; we are concerned with the long-term management and care of buildings and the future of our built environment. We have long-term experience in the conservation sector; designing and delivering projects within historic contexts and unlocking potential in existing sites, both for listed buildings and in conservation areas.
We believe that successful conservation involves building a meaningful relationship between old and new, while maintaining a clear distinction in design. As part of our conservation practice, we take active interest in historical research on all individual buildings, sites, and environments that we work with.
Our Services
We offer a range of services, including:
- Community engagement and project support, maintaining close ties to local communities to identify the potential for improving sites or providing new ones to enhance the community's public realm.
- Education sector expertise, working with local Education Authorities, schools, and nurseries to create imaginative learning spaces and landscapes.
- Civic, Municipal & Workspace expertise, providing brief writing and strategic thinking to deliver tailored designs for our clients.
- Conservation, repair, and adaptation of existing buildings, preserving heritage for future generations while making them suitable for 21st-century use.
