William Gray Associates, a modern architecture firm based in North Yorkshire, has a rich history that spans over three decades. Founded by William Gray, who studied architecture at Greenwich and Westminster Universities, the practice has evolved significantly since its inception in 1986. Initially, William worked with conservation architects Benson & Bryant before setting up his own practice in central London. The early years focused mainly on basement extensions, alterations, and residential projects within central and south London.

However, in the early 1990s, William made the decision to relocate his family to County Durham, marking a significant shift in the practice's direction. This move enabled the firm to expand its portfolio to include rural properties, townhouses, and listed buildings, in addition to commercial projects. Throughout its history, William Gray Associates has developed a reputation for its ability to successfully handle projects with tricky planning issues.

The practice's design philosophy is centered around modern design set within traditional surroundings. With a deep understanding of traditional design and detailing, the firm seeks to retain character while developing clean and harmonious forms. William's interests outside of architecture, including music, modern literature, history, and sports, have also played a significant role in shaping the practice's approach. As an RIBA Chartered Practice, William Gray Associates operates across County Durham, Yorkshire, Cumbria, Northumberland, Teesside, and throughout the north of England.
